Abstract:The technological communications between the East and the West which lasted from the 16th century to the 18th century was an important period in the history of cultural exchange between China and the West. The enlightenment thoughts arising from this period initiated the first all-round cultural contact and integration, as well as the collision of different ideas. Missionaries to China mainly served as the medium of cultural communication, who, on the one hand, sent letters on surveys of China's social conditions to Europe and on the other hand translated, and introduced western technological important books and knowledge to China, amidst the two-way cultural communication of "Westward spread of Eastern learning" and "Eastward spread of Western learning". This paper presents a case study of sculptural art, a vehicle of both Chinese and western thoughts, to examine how the audience cognize, accept and understand the aesthetic evolvement of the modern sculptural art in Macao from a contemporary perspective and the functional implications of its criticism, aesthetics and research mechanisms. In the meantime, this paper also explores the routes and outcomes of inbound and outbound communication, with a view of strengthening the value of national image and enhancing the intertranslation and information sharing in the acceptance and improvement of artistic genres within the region in addition to analyzing the formal language and spirits of sculptural art. Modern sculptural art in Macao also presents a two-way communication process of images, exhibiting artistic values and craft innovation in cultural communication.
